8 Massachusetts Outpatient Alcohol Rehab Programs Without Overnight Stay Requirements
For a long time, serious alcohol treatment meant a bed somewhere away from home. That picture has shifted in Massachusetts. Day programs, evening groups, online sessions and medication clinics now let many people get substantial help while sleeping in their own homes, and evening and virtual tracks have made outpatient care workable for more people.
That shift gives you more choice, but it also makes the options harder to tell apart, especially when the same provider runs both overnight and daytime programs. Some programs below never require an overnight stay; others run residential units but also offer outpatient tracks you can join directly or step into later. This guide shows you which is which, and what each would ask of your week.

- Refresh Recovery & Wellness: best for attending entirely from home
- Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital: best hospital-backed outpatient care
- Spectrum Health Systems: best clinics near home statewide
Eight Ways to Get Help Without Staying Overnight
#1 New Wave Recovery Center
Best for: intensive outpatient alcohol care while you live at home
At New Wave, your household can stay part of your treatment, because you go home every night and family therapy is built into the program. You would spend about six weeks in day treatment, most of each weekday, then about three months in IOP, choosing a day or evening track, with an optional relapse prevention phase of up to six months afterward.
The center says the same primary therapist stays with you from day treatment into IOP. You get CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing and medication management, plus holistic sessions scheduled every day, such as recovery yoga and sound baths. If your home is not a stable place right now, the program can arrange sober living through partners, and if you need detox first, it will refer you.
When you call the Salisbury program, a co-founder answers; all of the owners are in long-term recovery. WellSense is the in-network plan, and other insurance can be used as out-of-network benefits.
Verdict: The most complete outpatient path here if you want structure without leaving home.
#2 McLean Hospital
Best for: daytime psychiatric care alongside alcohol treatment
McLean's partial hospital programs in Belmont and Petersham let you attend treatment most of the day and sleep elsewhere, inside a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital. They suit you if your drinking comes with significant mental health symptoms.
Be aware that McLean also runs inpatient and residential units, its addiction pages describe no IOP or evening option, and MassHealth covers only its outpatient addiction care. Your insurer will usually need to approve partial hospital care in advance, so allow time for that step.
Verdict: Valuable psychiatric depth, with a limited outpatient menu.
#3 Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital
Best for: outpatient care with doctors close by
Brigham lets you attend a weekday day program from 9 am to 2:45 pm in Jamaica Plain, then step into a two-week evening program and ongoing medication visits, including by video. FDA-approved alcohol medications such as Vivitrol are available.
The hospital does run inpatient detox if you need it first, but there is no residential program, so you will not be asked to stay on site for weeks. The day program includes a psychiatric evaluation and daily counseling, and the evening groups are small, with no more than nine people. Addiction psychiatrists lead the team.
Verdict: A strong fit if you have medical or psychiatric conditions as well as drinking.
#4 Spectrum Health Systems (New England Recovery Center)
Best for: appointment-based care close to where you live
Spectrum's outpatient clinics in about a dozen communities let you see a counselor and get medication such as naltrexone without any overnight stay, and rapid access treatment can shorten the wait for your first visit. Locations include Haverhill, Saugus, Waltham, Worcester and Pittsfield.
The clinics do not run day treatment or IOP, so you will get support by appointment rather than a daily schedule. That suits you if you are already stable or finishing a more intensive program elsewhere. Spectrum's peer recovery centers in five cities offer drop-in support, and if you ever need detox or a residential stay, its Westborough campus provides both.
Verdict: Convenient ongoing care, lighter on structure.
#5 High Point Treatment Center
Best for: southeastern Massachusetts residents on limited budgets
High Point's outpatient clinics in Brockton, New Bedford, Plymouth and Taunton treat alcohol use and mental health together, and GuideStar reports the nonprofit serves you regardless of ability to pay. Third-party listings describe a sliding fee scale for people without insurance.
It also runs inpatient units, but you can use the clinics directly if an assessment shows you do not need them. Six recovery homes give you a supported place to live if home is not right for now, and its community behavioral health clinic offers crisis help at any hour. All of its sites are south of Boston.
Verdict: A reliable outpatient option across the southeast, especially if you have MassHealth or no insurance.
#6 Serenity at Summit Haverhill
Best for: Merrimack Valley residents stepping down from detox
Serenity offers PHP and IOP you can attend while living at home, usually after detox or a residential stay at the same Haverhill facility, which saves you a second intake. Sober living homes are available if you need a supportive place to live.
Hours are not published, so ask how many days you would attend. The company says it accepts private insurance and Medicaid and offers payment plans if you are uninsured. Medication-assisted treatment and a dual diagnosis program continue through the outpatient phase, and therapy includes yoga and mindfulness.
Verdict: A good outpatient step for people already in Serenity's care.
#7 Refresh Recovery & Wellness
Best for: never leaving the house for sessions
Refresh is outpatient only, and its day treatment and IOP run online for anyone in Massachusetts. You can also attend in person in Norwell, in men's or women's groups, and there are tracks for professionals and veterans.
Day treatment usually lasts two to four weeks, IOP four to eight weeks, with morning or evening sessions. Admissions answer around the clock, and if you need detox first, the team helps place you elsewhere. The website does not name an accreditor or say whether MassHealth is accepted, so ask about both.
Verdict: The most home-friendly format, with credentials to confirm.
#8 Washburn House
Best for: outpatient care with a fallback inpatient option in Worcester
Washburn's full-day and half-day outpatient programs let you live at home, and its detox and residential units in the same building are there if your needs change.
The Worcester facility accepts a long list of insurance, including several MassHealth plans and VA Community Care, and the company says you can often be admitted the same day or the next. Medication-assisted treatment is available. Outpatient hours are not published, so ask how the schedule would fit your week.
Verdict: Flexible in both directions, with broad insurance acceptance.
How We Evaluated These Programs
We looked first at whether you can attend without any overnight stay, either because the provider is outpatient only or because its outpatient tracks accept people directly. Then we compared how much structure each option gives you, from daily programs to clinic appointments.
We also weighed insurance, location and whether evening or online options exist, since a program you cannot reach or afford will not help you for long. Details come from each provider's published information, with third-party sources named where used. Outcome claims and self-published rankings were not considered.
